In 2023, Brown Mamas partnered with the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank (GPFB) to tackle food insecurity through the Groceries & Growth program. This initiative focused on increasing awareness of SNAP benefits and connecting Pittsburgh families to essential food resources.
Tangible Results
The program’s media campaign reached over 5,000 individuals, resulting in:
- 400 conversions to the GPFB website
- Over 100 referrals for SNAP assistance
- 26 moms successfully enrolled in SNAP services
These numbers highlight the program’s success in driving awareness and action, ensuring more families had access to vital food benefits.
Hands-On Engagement
The centerpiece of the program was a Groceries & Growth Meetup, where participants toured the GPFB’s grocery store, shopped for their households, and engaged directly with GPFB leaders in a Q&A session. Additionally, 27 moms were taken on a tour of the local food bank, where they received groceries for their households and met with diverse leaders from the food bank. These events empowered moms with resources and knowledge to navigate food access systems confidently.
Virtual Advocacy
To extend its reach, the program hosted a Food Access Panel within the Brown Mamas Facebook group. This virtual event brought together food access leaders and over 30 attendees, fostering discussions on improving food security and access to SNAP benefits.
Community Impact
Groceries & Growth demonstrated the power of culturally relevant, community-centered outreach. By combining media campaigns, in-person events, and virtual discussions, the initiative connected Black families with critical resources and strengthened partnerships with organizations like GPFB.
